Could Your Business Benefit from Data Sharing?

More widely shared data could benefit industry and society, but it has to be managed, controlled and disbursed in a way that its maximum potential can be extracted.

Could Your Business Benefit from Data Sharing

As children, one of the first and most important life skills we were taught is that it is good to share.

It’s an altruistic trait that has served us well for millennia – from sharing food as hunter gatherers to present-day lift sharing for our journey into work. It is an important unwritten rule that underpins and balances successful relationships… and, when paid forward, society in general.

These days, we have so much we can share with each other: in an industrial context the most important asset we have is certainly data.

Data has always been with us, but never in this volume, speed and from so many different places. Thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT) and huge advances in communication capabilities, we now have vast amounts of information being generated by multiple sources, all connected by newer, faster, more capable networks.

Most of this data needs to be kept private and secure, but there is a massive pool of data – both historic, recent and milliseconds old – that could be of real benefit to other individuals, companies and industries, if only it was more readily available and in an instantly useable format.

Increasing access to data can help improve many operational facets of the supply chain, including speed, accuracy and flexibility; it can drive innovation to a whole new level. We have seen countless examples of data being leveraged across connected enterprises, revolutionising the way companies do business. But people are recognising the additional worth of this data if it is shared to an even wider audience. As a result, manufacturers are looking to share data to improve production performance, and to work together with other companies to solve common challenges.

Creating a Digital-First Culture with C-Suite Buy-in
Learn how CIOs can meet their top challenges in creating a digital-first culture and proving the business case for digital transformation.

New Rules for Data

To ensure an adequate data exchange, the European Commission is proposing new rules on data governance.

By bringing together rules on data protection, the bloc hopes to strengthen the processing and free movement of data, but it must be conscious of the risks of introducing too many strict policies that could suppress innovation.

To really exploit the opportunities for shared data, the European Commission needs to focus on driving digitalization, prioritizing EU spending on digital transformation initiatives. Once this digital backbone is in place, the shared data will be more accessible to companies looking to embrace technologies such as automation, artificial intelligence, digital twins, Industrial Internet of Things and other emerging digital tools.

This won’t be an overnight project, but a standards-based digital foundation will make it much more effective.

In the first instance – the prep work – companies will need to combine data from multiple sources and merge it into a single unified platform, using data cleaning and/or ETL (extract, transform & load) mapping. They will also need to develop processes to validate data and make it consistent, so data sets and results are meaningful. Once the data is ‘cleaned’, the most obvious dissemination path is via the Cloud, where access and privacy can be tightly managed.

Data Sharing Really Works

A great example of this approach is Collaborative Condition Monitoring (CCM), which, as it sounds, collects basic, IP-free operational data and then shares it with multiple actors – in different industries or across the end-to-end value chain. The goal being to improve the reliability and service lifetime of machines and their components. Sharing it across other wider elements of the value chain soon creates a broader mutually supportive network; and with this multilateral data sharing, new insights can be gained.

The important role that digital solutions and networks play has been bought into sharp relief over the last 18 months, with digital transformation initiatives all accelerating as companies increase their resilience and adapt to the ‘new normal’. While some companies may choose to go it alone, we expect to see a trend of companies coming together to share data to speed up economic recovery. And so, through our joint efforts of greater data sharing in Europe, we will create a more robust digitally enhanced EU, leveraging its market power and turning it into a competitive edge to emerge from the COVID-19 crisis stronger.

These transformations and the EU recovery fund are pieces in a much larger puzzle, as success will also depend on the wider infrastructure, such as broadband networks, cloud solutions, and blockchain, which, in turn, emphasises the need for robust cybersecurity.

There are many facets to this data-socialism concept, but none of them present issues that are insurmountable. Indeed, much of the foundation work is already in place, with earlier implementations driven by previous external factors and market forces.

To a large extent it is now all about encouraging people to show others their hand and support the concept of a team victory. Go it alone and you may win, but work as a team and you will win bigger. From sharing sweets as a kid, to sharing life-transforming data as a company, the feel-good factor never changes; and these days your data could make a real difference.
